This is interesting but I’m confused. You said it was impossible and here say it is possible.

A few years later, Simon Tatham and Gareth Taylor showed that it is possible to reach the 5th line with a sequence of 5 moves.
At the beginning of their paper, they give a good intuition about how Conway proved his argument:
