The 4% rule is meant as a supplement to social security. If you have 500K and withdraw 4%, 20K, and get 2500-3000/month in SS, your income is decent, even after taxes. It also rightly assumes you have little or no debt. It works. But is a guide, rule of thumb. You have to adjust based on your circumstances.
